Scholarship Info

The North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship provides tuition funds for qualifying families that come directly to the school from the state government (i.e., it does not “pass through” the county budget or directly impact our local school funding).

The application and renewal process is simple and may be initiated at the NCSEAA website beginning February 1st. Priority enrollment continues until March 1st. It has been our experience that if you meet the income and eligibility requirements scholarships usually come through because funding has not to date been exhausted. Also, once you receive the scholarship, you can continue to renew it annually unless your income goes over the limit. Income verification is not required for application, though they may ask for materials on a random basis later in the year.

Please contact the school office to further discuss alternative payment options.

You may be eligible for more than $6000 in scholarship from the state for your child’s tuition from the NC Opportunity Scholarship!

NC Opportunity Scholarship Info:

In the most recent state budget, there were some significant changes to the program that increased the amount of the award, expanded eligibility, and increased the income limit for families. Here are a few highlights of the Opportunity Scholarship program:

  • Scholarship maximum has increased to $6,492 which equals 90% of the state's public school per pupil spending for a full-time student. As public school per pupil spending increases each year, so would the scholarship amount.

  • Students currently attending private schools are eligible who meet the income criteria and are rising Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd graders.

  • Students who have previously been enrolled in public school in the past 2 years are eligible. Please click here for more information.

  • Eligibility has expanded to include students who are 4-years-old on or before April 16, if the student is accepted to a private school and is enrolled in Kindergarten. More details can be found here.

  • All students who meet the income criteria and are children of recently honorably discharged veterans are eligible, as well all foster children, regardless of income.

  • Please see the household income requirements here.

The Opportunity Scholarship is also available for students currently enrolled in an NC public school in any grade. If you know of families in the area that are interested in Mountain Sun, please help make them aware of this program.
