Step 1 Your First Visit

The enrollment process at Mountain Sun is designed for you to learn more about the school and our community and for our teachers and students to learn more about your family. It is the beginning of what we hope to be a lifelong connection. Visiting our campus and classrooms is the best way to get to know Mountain Sun. Step 2 The Application

Parents are invited to complete and submit an application form. Our initial application deadline is March 1 but applications are accepted on a rolling basis for available spaces. Currently enrolled families will submit re-enrollment forms by February 28th, and after that time any available spaces may be offered to new applicants.

Students currently enrolled at another school should also complete the records release form. Students applying to the middle school (7th grade and higher) should submit a 1-2 page essay discussing their motivations for joining Mountain Sun.

A non-refundable application fee of $50 is due with the application and a signed form authorizing the request and release of records from your child’s previous school should accompany the application if applicable. All information will be kept confidential.

Step 3 The Child’s Visit

After the initial application review, your child may be invited to spend a day in the classroom. This allows your child to begin to feel comfortable with the environment, the children, and the teachers, and it also allows our teachers to discover more about your child’s needs. Please see “A Day in the Life” for our daily rhythm. All children should bring a water bottle and be prepared to be active outdoors. Children aged Kindergarten and up should bring a snack and lunch. For this visit, please arrive at the school office and Michael will guide you to the classroom.

Your signed enrollment agreement also indicates your pledge to abide by the policies of the Parent Handbook.

Step 4 Enrollment

The visit and application process helps all of us: parents, teachers, child, and director, determine if Mountain Sun is the best educational environment for each student and begin the important work of building our relationships. If we mutually agree that Mountain Sun Community School is a good place for your child and family to learn, grow, and thrive, an enrollment agreement will be offered and should be returned no later than 2 weeks following acceptance.

This agreement should be accompanied by a non-refundable enrollment deposit, $250 for preschool children and $500 for children Kindergarten through Middle School. This enrollment deposit is deducted from the tuition balance. A signed enrollment agreement and enrollment deposit secures a place in the school and is a commitment for your child to attend Mountain Sun for the full school year. Your signed enrollment agreement also indicates your pledge to abide by the policies of the Parent Handbook.

Tuition

Mountain Sun has always been committed to keeping tuition levels as affordable as possible. Our tuition levels are in most cases significantly lower than other independent schools regionally and nationally. We strive to make Mountain Sun possible for a diverse population of children and families.

Annual preschool tuition: $4,600 for 5 half days.

Annual Kindergarten through Middle School tuition: $7,600.

Field trip fees will be assessed separately. Given the experiential and exploratory nature of the Upper Elementary and Middle School, these fees may be several hundred dollars for those classes. The annual total fees for these trips will be determined before the beginning of the school year, and parents may pay for these fees according to their chosen payment plan. Students may be responsible for raising a portion of these fees through fundraising and entrepreneurial activities.  

A sibling discount of 20% off of tuition is offered for younger siblings.

Tuition is due in full by July 1st or may be paid through one of the following payment plans:

  • Payment in full by May 1st qualifies for a 3% discount.
  • Two payments: Due July 1st and January 1st.
  • Four payments: Due July 1st, October 1st, January 1st, and April 1st
  • Monthly installments: Due July 1st through May 1st (11 installments). Payment is due on the 1st of each month.

Your choice of payment plan will be indicated on your enrollment agreement. Tuition may be paid by cash, check, money order, or bank draft.

Financial Assistance

Through the generosity of our many supporters and prudent management of our finances, Mountain Sun is sometimes able to offer some financial assistance to qualifying families. Financial assistance applications are available by request and should be completed early in the application process. In most cases, financial assistance awards will be offered in conjunction with the enrollment agreement. Financial assistance is offered based on need and availability of funds.
